Special thanks
to Patrick Evans for the following preview of
Turok:
Back in the prior generation, the N64 launched
with only two titles but was soon followed by
the classic Turok, giving players of the new
Nintendo system a mature title even before
Goldeneye hit the scene. Although sequels were
released and the series eventually hit the
current gen consoles, it never grabbed the
attention of the timeless original.
Originally an Acclaim property, Turok has found
a new home with Buena Vista Games. Now taking
place on a uncharted planet in the future, the
protagonist will be searching for a war criminal
named Kane and his pack of hooligans. These
fugitives aren’t the only danger on this planet,
of course, as dinosaurs quickly make a scene
during the combat and complicate the situation
awfully quickly.
The constant barrage of gunfire and giant
lizards is alleviated slightly by the supporting
commando squadron that accompanies you
throughout the game, but the pure action of
previous run-and-guns has been carried into this
title. E3’s preview showing provided some
insight into just how much on-screen action will
take place, what with the enemy trying to defend
themselves, squad-mates supporting with
independent AI, and dinosaurs popping in
uninvited. Of course, going along with the
current trend, all the different vegetation and
make-shift buildings will be fully destructible.
As this is a Turok title, the dinosaurs will
take center stage in many aspects of the game.
Creatures of the uncharted jungle, these lizards
act independently of the battlefield looking for
a meal. Early in the game, encountering a raptor
or bigger will not be a winnable battle. In
these situations, the independent AI will
usually attack indiscriminately, meaning you can
try to hide and hope your enemies attract more
attention. If that T-rex that has just crashed
the shootout sees the enemy before you, waiting
for it to smash up their position would be the
best bet for survival.
Twitch-reaction gameplay and run-and-gun
strategy will be the order of the day when Turok
releases. While the bow-and-arrow and knife will
allow for silent kills, the only stealth action
is centered on speed and line-of-sight.
Handguns, shotguns, sniper rifles, and the other
typical weapons of FPSs will be here, along with
some new “futuristic” weapons that will offer
plenty of new strategy to deal with the human
threat and to defend yourself from the giant
lizard trying to eat you. While the details are
short as of yet, the release date is far enough
from now that things could be changed by
shipping date. As of now, Turok is set to ship
sometime next year.
