Formula 1:
Amongst the crowd of people watching Genki 2 and
Heavenly Sword, the crowd surrounding F1 06
seems small in comparison. After waiting
patiently for a solid five minutes, we finally
got our mitts on "that other racing title" for
PS3.
Immediately, the minute details represented in
the cockpit and on the car are evident. When
using the camera view from the car's fin (above
the cockpit), you can see the driver's hands
move with a realism I have never seen before.
More impressive than that, however, is his
jerking head reacting to the wind passing around
him as he drives down the straightaway going
over 200 mph. The tires even get that "backward
rotation" going at certain speeds, just like in
real life.
Crowds watching the race from the stands look
very real when driving full speed, but when one
stops to take a look at the crowd it seems
static and uninteresting. The course itself
looks phenomenally detailed, from the gravel to
the tire marks and the newly seeded grass around
the edges of the cement.
Outside of the visuals, there isn't much to
report on F1 06. The control scheme felt right
compared to other F1 titles and collisions with
other cars gave the expected reaction to both
car and driver, but the lack of damage modeling
loses points for the overall package. An
interesting change to the control scheme,
putting the throttle on the right control stick
as well as on the button faces, feels out of
place and unnecessary.
Race fans will have much to look forward to as
the PS3 releases and F1 06 gets its chance to
shine uncontested before the release of Gran
Turismo. At 60 percent complete, my only wish
would be that they add realistic damage modeling
to the game in order to make things look as real
after a crash as they do before.
